Change your dock on Mac OS X Leopard
Hey everyone, this is my first tutorial and it concerns—what else?—the Mac. Tons of people hate the way the dock appears in the latest version of OS X, Leopard, and I’ve discovered some pretty cool ways to change them around. So, lets get started with the Dock.
These mods only work on the latest release of Mac OS X as of this post, 10.6 Leopard.
The Dock has this ugly grayish-white hue to it in Leopard that makes the whole desktop scores uglier. There’s an annoying white curving line that divides the Dock shelf in half and hinders the reflective quality of the Dock. If you’d like to be rid of the white, you should check out this site for a “Glass Dock,” the likes of which I’m using on my MacBook now. Just download the .zip file and follow the instructions below (instructions are also included on the .zip file in a text document):
- Open the .zip and extract the five images, named
scurve
something andfrontline
. - Open
Macintosh HD/System/Library/Core Services
. - In the
Core Services
folder, there will be an icon labeled “Dock.” Ctrl click it and click “Show Package Contents.” - A new Finder window will appear with the folder
Contents
. Follow it toContents/Resources
. - Here’s the tricky part. Find the files named
scurve
something and the file namedfrontline
and make a copy of each of them somewhere safe on your hard drive. You should make this copy if you ever want to return to your Dock’s original look. You’ll need to enter an administrator password to edit these files. - Whether you delete them or take them somewhere else, get these five files out of the
Resources
folder and replace them with the ones from the .zip file for Glass Dock. - Open Terminal and enter the
killall Dock
command. Your Dock will disappear and come back up in the Glass Dock look. It should look like this:
These instructions will work for any varying theme you choose to apply to your dock. Other themes and colors, etc. are available here for download. These dock mods install exactly the same way that Glass Dock was implemented above. If you accidentally delete any of the original Dock images, they are available for download here. If you only want to change your dock to a different color, try this website.
Here are just some of the endless possibilities:
