AppleInsider reports that it received an email from the Apple execs concerning a special event in California tomorrow, September 5th. The graphic the email contained was a picture in Cover Flow of a fifth-generation iPod with the caption, September 5, the beat goes on.

For me, along with millions of others worldwide, this translates into “New iPod with Cover Flow tomorrow!!” Basically, I’m pumped. The following are my predictions/wishes for the new iPod:

  1. Touchscreen. Pretty much everyone accepts this one due to Apple’s newest gadget, the iPhone, and its patenting of all kinds of touch-screen related innovations. The new iPod will almost undoubtedly be full screen and touch sensitive.1
  2. OS X-based. Another universally accepted prediction, for similar reasons as number 1.1
  3. Wi-fi? Here’s where people disagree. The new iPod might feature some new internet and wireless capabilities like the iPhone does. Many people believe Apple might roll out an iPhone minus AT&T and call it the iPod (6th generation). Others expect iPod-to-iPod connectivity like that found on the Zune, but I don’t think Apple is willing to spread the internet and connectivity features of the iPhone over to the iPod just yet. I expect a pure media player.1
  4. 40 GB model? 100 GB? Due to new developments in the world of handheld hard drives, Apple might up the storage space in its flagship iPods. Personally, I expect 40 and 80 GB models.2
  5. New colors? This is more of a hope than anything else, but because of the popularity of Zune’s multiple colors, Apple might produce the iPod in a spectrum of hues. Personally, I hope they make gray.3

Really, I pray they keep the iPod as purely a media player and keep internet and wi-fi out of the equation. Bigger hard drives, touch-screen and colors would be nice, however. There are my predictions,1 and I can only hope all the good ones come true. I’ll go over which ones I got right and wrong in a subsequent post.  Thanks, Masoni

  1. September 2008: Man, was I wrong on most of these. For predictions 1, 2, and 3, it was yes for the iPod touch; no for the flagship model. ↩︎ ↩︎2 ↩︎3 ↩︎4

  2. The iPod classic originally had 80GB and 160GB; the iPod classic (7th generation) has 120GB. ↩︎

  3. Colors for the nano and shuffle? Yeah, there were. At least the classic is gray! ↩︎
